After participating in band night at the Indiana County Fair every year in high school, it was nice to finally be the photographer who bounced around shooting pictures. Watching the kids stand mixed together from 12 different school districts brought back memories of mass band (at the end of band night, all of the bands come together to play two songs) and being instructed to "play along", meaning, go through the motions of playing the notes with our instruments to our mouths but refrain from actually breathing into the instrument. We were so terrible that our drum major concluded that we would do so much damage to the performance that the only benefit our band could provide would be audible withdrawal. Yes--within seconds--our little band would have ruined the hours and hours of practice that the other schools had invested in. Of course, that didn't stop me or the other clarinets from attempting to freestyle, causing hysterics, and being downright obnoxious. We didn't even have sheet music for the second song...
